Saturday 17th June


9.45 am – A railway ramble

A pleasant 10 mile circular walk through rolling countryside taking in the parklands of Bretton Hall, YSP and Cawthorne Park.  Get there by train to Darton.  Start: 9.45am at DARTON  station.  Finish: DARTON.

Depart: Huddersfield 08.08, Penistone 08.42 to change at Barnsley 08.58.  OR Depart: Sheffield 09.06,  Meadowhall 09.12, Chapeltown 09.18, Elsecar 09.24, Wombwell 09.27, Barnsley 09.34 to DARTON.

2pm – Pen Den Trail

A varied and scenic walk from Penistone Railway Station to Denby Dale Railway Station via the Trans Pennine Trail and public rights of way with only a small amount of road walking.  Very well-behaved dogs permitted entirely at owners’ risk but must be very closely controlled and must be on short lead where the route crosses farmland (detour may be necessary if cattle are present). A very popular published route, available in leaflet form and also downloadable from www.denbydale-walkersarewelcome.org.uk/leaflets/PDT.pdf

Meet at 2pm at forecourt of Penistone Railway Station.  Parking at Penistone and Denby Dale stations.

Toilets, cafes, shops and the like in nearby Penistone town centre.

Hourly “Penistone Line” trains visit both stations (alight at Penistone for start of walk and return by train from Denby Dale to Penistone if desired). Summer timetable not published until May, but start of walk should coincide with arrival of train from Denby Dale a few minutes earlier (we will wait for the train if timetable changes).

Holmfirth -Denby Dale – Penistone bus 350 could also be used to reach start of walk (check timetable as times may alter).



Sunday 18th June



10.30am – Deepcar/Green Moor/Hunshelf/Fox Valley Circular

A moderate walk - country lanes, woods and fields with well-marked paths. Includes a mix of both gentle and steep climbs. Can be very muddy in parts. Some steep gradients and stiles.  Starting in Deepcar, this walk of contrasts takes you through woods, close to the River Don and then up to Green Moor. It than skirts along a recently designated path on Hunshelf Bank before providing the opportunity to use a recently constructed bridleway. You then return through steelworks before passing through a shopping centre on your return to Deepcar. 

Meet at Station Road, Deepcar (Grid Ref SK 290 980).  Parking available.  Public transport – SL1, SL1a, 57 pass close to Deepcar.






10.30am – Lower Denby / Gunthwaite Circular

The walk is mainly on footpaths and tracks with short sections on country lanes.  The terrain is gently undulating with superb views. About five and a half miles but  several short cuts are available in case of doubtful weather.  Leisurely with moderate gradients but may be a little muddy in places. Stout footwear is advisable. A range of stile types are encountered.  Meet at 10:30am,   Dunkirk Inn Car Park.  Refreshments available at the Inn.






12 noon – Denby Dawdle – Pie & Pea Walk

A ramble of around 4 miles through fields and woodland around Upper Denby, following the route of the Denby Dash annual race.  A leisurely walk, generally easy though likely some undulations and stone step-over stiles.  Dogs under control welcome but please note there is likely to be livestock in some fields.  Parking and toilets available at the pub.  Homemade pie, peas and potatoes available at The George after the walk.  Please book these in advance (Pie, peas & gravy £4.95pp / pie, peas, potatoes & gravy £6.50pp)

A 3 mile, leisurely, historical walk around Farnley Tyas covering farming history, listed buildings and gossip!  Meeting at the Golden Cock, Farnley Tyas.  Toilets, parking and refreshments available at the Golden Cock.

6.30pm – Lower Cumberworth Circular

A leisurely walk with no significant hill climbs or descents.  There are no untoward hazards.  There is one step-over stile; the others are walk through.  There is a fairly busy road to cross twice.  Meet at The Foresters Arms, Lower Cumberworth at 6.15pm for a prompt start at 6.30pm.  A maximum 2 hour walk, returning at 8.30pm. .

6.45pm - High Flatts History Trail

A leisurely 3 mile walk, 1000 feet above sea level,  taking in High Flatts “mini Iona”.  Meet at the Quaker Meeting House brown sign on Penistone Road, HD8 8XU at 6.30pm.  Refreshments will be served on return at the Quaker Meeting House.  Toilets and parking available at the Quaker Meeting House.

6.45pm – Heritage Trail of Upper Denby

A gentle tour of the village Conservation Area with local Historian John Hislop.  A generally easy walk, mainly paved paths around the village.  Meet at 6.45pm at The George, HD8 8UE.  Parking available at the pub.  Homemade Pie & Peas available to order (£4.95 - please book by 21st March).  No public toilets en-route.



Friday 23rd June


5.30pm – Cannon Hall Circular

5.75 miles / 3.5 hours

A leisurely walk with a few stiles.  Some ascents and descents not too bad.  Much of route through woodlands with glimpses of Cannon Hall Farm from different angles. Best view point is near Deffer Hill, southwards Silkstone, westwards Denby Dale.  Meet at 17:30 hours. Church Street, Cawthorne.  Near to Spencers Arms. (for drinks afterwards).  Just off A635 Barnsley Road.  Facilities at Spencers Arms for customers.

10am – On The Spur - Cycle Ride

A leisurely off- road cycle ride with refreshment break at Denby Dale.  Meet at Box Ings Lane, Kirkburton.  This is immediately to the South of Kirkburton Parish Church.  The route climbs from Kirkburton through Shelley Woods and continues to Shepley. There follows a road section through Skelmanthorpe and a final track to Denby Dale. We will return by either the same route or via roads, depending on timing and weather conditions.  Parking on village car park adjacent to the start.

Walk from Upper Cumberworth to Quaker Bottom and back via Square Wood Reservoir.  Leisurely walk with a moderate climb to Lowhouse Farm.  All walk on footpaths with some stiles.  Meet at Star public house at 1.45pm.  No public toilets en-route but refreshments and toilets at Star public house before and after walk.

A walk south towards the Don valley using some little used footpaths. Use 'em, or lose 'em!.

A moderate walk - country lanes, woods and fields with well-marked paths. Includes a mix of both gentle and steep climbs. Can be very muddy in parts. Some steep gradients and stiles.  This route will take you through woods, close to the River Don and then up to Green Moor. We then drop to the Trans Pennine Trail, call in the Bridge Inn at Thurgoland, skirt Cote Green, and then climb up to Wortley (for the Wortley Arms and the Wortley Club Beer Festival).   Start – meet the walk leader in the Royal Oak (on Manchester Road by the junction with Carr Road, Deepcar) @ 12 noon.  Public Transport – SL1, SL1a, 57 pass close to Deepcar.  Grid Reference – SK 290 980.  Either get bus back from Wortley or walk back to Deepcar (1.9 miles) for buses to Stocksbridge/Sheffield (57, SL1, SL1A – frequent services).  Return bus from Wortley: 29 bus @ 16:38 (to Sheffield) or 18:44/20:46 to Chapletown.
