Makers, Miners and Money

The East Peak Innovation Partnership is supporting the development of a regional tourism route drawing together some of the outstanding industrial heritage of the area in order to make it all better known both to visitors and locally.  A new website promoting the route has just been launched at www.makersminersmoney.org/index.htm. A promotional leaflet will also be available soon.

What do places such as Kelham Island, the National Coal Mining Museum, Elsecar, Cannon Hall and Wentworth Castle have in common? The links are the makers who worked with iron and steel, the miners who fuelled the wheels of industry and the money made by industry which funded the area’s large estates and houses -  and, of course, the rivers and trails that connect them all. On those rivers you can find many of the smaller early workshops, mines and railways that led to bigger things – whether Wortley Top Forge and Rockley Furnace or Silkstone Waggonway and the Huskar Colliery, the East Peak was the seedbed for all sorts of exciting things!
