A new Local Development Strategy for LEADER 2015 - 2019

The East Peak Innovation Partnership (EPIP) is currently planning for the next round of LEADER programmes which are due to start in January 2015. We have submitted a new Local Development Strategy (LDS) setting out the objectives for a further LEADER programme in our area which Defra are currently appraising. The LDS has been endorsed by both the Leeds City Region and Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). Barnsley MBC will continue to act as Accountable Body for LEADER activities in the East Peak.

The type of projects supported in the next programme will have a strong focus on jobs and promoting economic growth in rural areas with the following priorities for funding - support for increasing farm productivity, support for micro and small enterprises and farm diversification, support for rural tourism, provision of rural services, support for cultural and heritage activity and support for increasing forestry productivity.

The LDS includes a SWOT analysis developed through the involvement of a wide range of partners and which highlights the need:

a.         To support resilience in the farming, forestry and wider sectors of business and to support the business and voluntary and community sectors to retain and develop key rural services in the LEADER area.

b.         To achieve sustainable economic growth in the LEADER area and to assist partners to deliver innovative project activity which will enable both businesses (particularly those whose activities reflect the landscape, environment, culture and heritage of the LEADER area and support the visitor economy) and communities to thrive.

c.         To address the variations in economic performance in different parts of the LEADER area.

The LEADER area will also be extended into neighbouring rural communities in south west Wakefield, including West Bretton, Woolley and Notton. A map of the new LEADER area can be downloaded from here.
